WELCOME TO AAHN

The African American Homeschoolers Network (AAHN) is an organization established for families seeking educational resources. Founded by Meka Hunt and Akosua Boateng in 2002, the network has grown consistently. Resources for members include a membership database allowing members to connect all over the world.  We have a directory to help members find products and services to assist them in their educational efforts.  We also offer a newsletter, resource guide, workshops, and conferences to address relevant topics in homeschooling.

Why African Americans Are Homeschooling

Home schooling in America is growing rapidly among African American families. The population of African American home schooled children is estimated to be around 84,000 - 120,000. Many parents are selecting homeschooling and/or alternative education within the community instead of public schools as the choice for educating their children.  Through strong networks with other homeschooling families, and partners within the community, we are able to raise well-rounded, academically and mentally strong children.  These children will grow up to positively impact our communities.  The public school systems within urban areas are struggling with academic deficiencies and violence.  More and more parents are looking for another way.  We are taking the destinies of our children into our own hands.

The Girls Institute of Science and Technology (GIST)

In 2004 Akosua Boeteng went to Ghana as a Fulbright Scholar, and observed the many poverty stricken girls who were not being educated.  When Akosua returned, she met with Meka Hunt and together they decided to open a school.  The Girls’ Institute of Science and Technology, Inc. (GIST) opened in September 2006 in Agogo, Ghana. We are an official NGO in Ghana and Nonprofit organization in America.

The students are taught in the core subject areas, with concentrations in science and technology.  They receive instruction in technology at the closeby Microsoft Center. Our goal is to prepare girls for a future in science and technology.  Our Board of Directors include educators and scientists who are known internationally.  For more information on GIST, or to make a donation, contact Akosua Boeteng at 404-246-8991.
